Marine Ecology Education

Eastchester Bay was at one time the largest  oyster farming  estuary in the USA. Because of water pollution, the oysters died out, and those that were left are considered unsafe to eat. Now the City Island Oyster Reef, part of the Billion Oyster Project, is working to clean up the waters of Eastchester Bay and re-establish oyster reefs. City Island Junior Sailing visits the Oyster Reef a number of times over the summer where the children learn about the life of the oyster and its purifiying effect on the water.

City Island Youth Foundation supports the work of the City Island Oyster Reef (CIOR), and some of our youth go on to become interns and pursue Coastal Engineering as a result of their exposure to the work of CIOR.
